PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

Photorealistic 3D Renders for a Diverse Jewelry Catalog

The client required renders of their custom jewelry pieces that align with their high-end brand image and enhance the online buying experience. Key requirements included:

  • High-Quality 4K Renders

The client provided 3D CAD files in IGS format and required photorealistic 4K high-resolution image renders. These image renders needed to showcase the true brilliance of diamonds, realistic metal surfaces, and accurate shaders, including diamond dispersion, caustics, and surface microdetails ensuring the final images reflected the exceptional craftsmanship expected of a luxury bespoke jewelry brand.

  • Multiple Angles for Visualization

The client required at least 3–4 image perspectives per product, including hero angles, close-up side shots, and angled side views to highlight clarity, structure, and setting details. These renders were essential for showcasing the jewelry in the eCommerce catalog and giving customers a comprehensive view of the product.

  • Visual Consistency Across the Catalog

Maintaining uniform lighting, color calibration, diamond brilliance, and metal tones was crucial to creating a cohesive, premium experience across the entire online catalog. This consistency ensured that the brand's luxury aesthetic was reflected in every render, fostering trust and professionalism.

  • Faster and Scalable Workflow

The client required a scalable, repeatable, and faster rendering solution that could keep pace with the high-demand nature of custom jewelry production while maintaining technical accuracy and high visual standards.

  • Accurate Representation of Jewelry Categories

The client required renders across multiple jewelry categories, including engagement rings, wedding bands, bracelets, pendants, necklaces, everyday rings, cufflinks, earrings, and stud earrings. Each render needed to capture the brilliance and craftsmanship of the pieces, providing customers with an authentic preview of the product.

PROJECT CHALLENGES

Managing Geometry, Alignment, and Accuracy Challenges in Jewelry Rendering

Transforming the client’s vision into digital renders required more than just standard rendering skills. The project involved creative problem-solving, technical adjustments, and a keen attention to detail. Challenges included:

  • CAD File Conversion: The client provided IGS files, which were not suitable for photorealistic rendering. Converting these mathematical surfaces from IGS files (NURBS based geometry) into polygonal mesh models required complex adjustments and often led to broken geometry, missing surfaces, and inaccurate design details.
  • Mesh Inaccuracies: Many of the provided mesh files had incorrect gemstone cuts and misaligned facets, leading to unrealistic refraction and sparkle. The diamond geometry was flawed, with inaccurate table, crown height, and pavilion angles, which compromised the photorealism of the renders.
  • Coordinate Alignment Across Software: Moving assets through multiple software tools required precise alignment of XYZ coordinates, object pivot points, and 3D cursor positions. Without accurate XYZ product placement, objects tend to go "haywire" in 3D space when transferred between platforms, leading to broken reflections and unnatural light falloff. This demanded constant calibration to maintain a cohesive luxury aesthetic across the entire collection.
  • Jewelry Metal Color Accuracy: Metals such as 14K, 18K, 22K, and 24K yellow gold, white gold, and platinum require precise spectral color calibration. Even slight deviations from the correct tone would result in a cheap or inconsistent appearance, which was a challenge that required careful attention to detail to avoid unnecessary revision loops.
  • Camera Angle Selection: The client’s preference for luxury-standard camera angles increased the risk of feedback loops. Since these camera angles vary widely across categories, a lack of a standardized approach often lead clients to reject angles after rendering, resulting in rework.
  • Rendering Speed Limitations: Traditional rendering engines (Cycles, V-Ray, Arnold, Octane) were too slow, taking 25–40 minutes per render. With 2,000 4K resolution image renders required, this would have required weeks or months of production time, necessitating a faster, optimized rendering solution.
  • Custom Shader Development: The client needed a custom gemstone (Cabochon) material for which no existing shader or PBR material existed in any library. Developing this shader/3D material from scratch required an accurate representation of the gemstone's unique visual properties.
OUR SOLUTION

Developing a Tailored Workflow for High-Quality Jewelry Renders at Scale

With a mandate to produce over 2,000 photorealistic jewelry renders, each captured from at least 5 angles, we engineered a workflow tailored to the demands of large-scale, high-end visualization. Our advanced 3D jewelry rendering services and targeted process innovation ensured that quality and consistency were never compromised, even at this ambitious volume and tight deadline.

1

CAD-to-Mesh Conversion Pipeline

  • Developed a custom workflow using 5 different industry standard tools to convert IGS CAD files into accurate polygonal mesh models.
  • Ensured meshes maintained clean topology, proper normals, accurate edge loops, and optimized polygon counts without any compromise in design accuracy.
  • Choose the GLB file format for its lightweight structure and compatibility across various tools and rendering engines.
2

Mesh Cleanup, Diamond Accuracy & Geometry Corrections

  • Performed post-CAD-to-mesh conversion cleanup, correcting geometry artifacts such as missing faces, intersecting surfaces, and inaccurate gemstone seating.
  • Rebuilt gemstone geometry to match real-world cuts (oval, cushion, round brilliant), ensuring correct facet alignment for optimal brilliance and dispersion.
  • Replaced broken or inaccurate gemstones with super-accurate diamond and gemstone geometries, ensuring correct facet structure, symmetry, and optical behavior aligned with real-world cutting standards.
  • Restored proper pavilion depth, crown height, table proportions, and facet alignment to achieve natural brilliance, fire, and dispersion expected in luxury jewelry visualization.

Why Diamond Cuts Matter?

Diamond cuts control how light enters, reflects, refracts, and exits the stone. Even minor geometric imperfections can make diamonds appear flat, dull, or artificial. Physically accurate cuts are essential to produce realistic sparkle, depth, and perceived value, especially for high-end bespoke jewelry sold online.

1

Product Positioning, Origin Setup & Coordinate Calibration

  • Standardize coordinate alignment, pivot points, and 3D cursor positions across all tools to maintain consistency.
  • Ensured accurate light falloff, shadow placement, and reflection accuracy by aligning all assets correctly in 3D world space.
2

Material Development & Design Board Workflow

  • Created a Design Board for client approval, presenting 8+ metal (gold, platinum) tone variants & gemstone materials, and low-res previews for confirming exact tones.
  • Eliminated back-and-forth revisions by locking in all metal and gemstone shades before high-resolution rendering & large scale production even begins.
3

Camera Angles, Competitor Research & Pre-Approval

  • Conducted research across top luxury jewelry brands (Michael Hill, Swarovski, Miadonna) to optimize camera angles and lighting setups.
  • Proposed and added category-specific camera angles that showcased intricate details, ensuring alignment with luxury jewelry standards.
  • Secured pre-approvals for camera angles, lighting templates and compositions to prevent delays during production.
4

WebGL Rendering Pipeline & Hyper-Efficient Output

  • Leveraged digital 3D rendering to act as a "virtual camera," calculating how light interacts with 3D models to transform technical data into photorealistic 4K images.
  • Set up and implemented a custom WebGL rendering engine pipeline for batch processing, achieving 4K photoreal output in just 4 seconds per image, which is 400 times faster than traditional rendering. The industry standard for each image is 25-40 minutes.
  • Used custom HDRIs (environment images that are reflected by the jewelry metals), lighting profiles, for enhanced reflections, sparkle, refraction, and metal realism.
  • Created configuration files for each SKU, including metal variations, gemstone variations, camera presets, and lighting profiles for easy scalability & batch renders.
5

Creation of Custom Gemstone Shader

  • Developed a bespoke shader for the non-primary tone gemstone using Adobe Substance Painter and custom rendering tools.
  • Created custom texture maps and tuned optical parameters to replicate the unique translucency, dome reflection, and internal color gradients of the natural gemstone.
6

Delivering Immersive-Ready Renders

  • We delivered all assets in a standardized GLB format with optimized geometry and precise pivot-point calibration. This ensures the collection is natively compatible with 360-degree 3D viewers, AR (Augmented Reality), and virtual showrooms, providing the client with immediate flexibility for future interactive marketing strategies.
